Wink Acer Aspire 8935G ATI Catalyst Graphics and Brother DCP-340CW driver issue

Hi y'all, I'm in need of a graphics Driver for Acer Aspire 8935G 64bit, previously ATI Catalyst Graphics for Intel chipset. I currently have Ubuntu 13.10 installed, but wouldn't mind using Mint 15 if that helps.
I'm new to Linux and don't have a grasp of the language yet, I only know that I've had enough of Windows & Apples extortionate attitude.

Thanks in advance

Bob

Your laptop features the Radeon HD4670 videochip, which is not supported by AMD's current driver. There is a legacy driver for this device, but it will not work on newer systems. Your options are:
- Go with an older Linux version, like Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and use the legacy driver.
- Go with a recent Linux version and use the free radeon driver. In this case you should run a version that features kernel 3.12 and Mesa 9.2 (or newer), to get full support for dynamic power management and hardware video decoding.

Hi Tobi
Thank you so much for your advice, like I say, I am a complete newbie to this way of life, so how do I determine which Radeon driver has the components you mention, and would it be available from radeon, in order to keep the later system installed?
many thanks
Bob

The radeon driver comes pre-installed on Ubuntu, so you have it already running. Hardware video decoding should work out of the box on 13.10, but for power management you need to install a new kernel and change bootloader option. If you are new to Linux this may be a bit much, basically you will have to download the newest kernel from kernel.org, compile it and install it. You then have to change your kernel options in your bootloader's configuration, adding the option radeon.dpm=1.
It may be easier to revert to 12.04 and wait for Ubuntu 14.04, which will have all this running out of the box.

Thanks Tobi, I think I will do as you suggest, and wait for 14.04, many thanks for your advice.
