Again, what linux distribution are you using? What, if any, changes did you make or observe just before this happened? As you try to fix the problem tell us what you have done and what you recieve for error messages.

If you press "Enter" at the Ubuntu boot splash(purple screen, keyboard icon at the bottom), can you get to the Ubuntu boot screen to find memory testing?

Memtest86+ is on many live-cds, including Ubuntu. if you can, you might try to open the back of your laptop and remove all but one memory module, then run Memtest86+ for several hours. Repeat the process with any other modules.

It can be difficult to isolate such a problem to either a fault in your hardware or an instance of linux going off the rails, so try to be systematic and thorough in what you do and what you post.

EDDY1 sets you on the right path for trouble shooting your graphics chip, but it would be good to test the hardware with a live-cd of some version of linux that should boot with this Aspire, maybe a linux for netbook(Ubuntu Netbook?). Google will tell you more.

I just pressed enter while I'm on the Ubuntu screen and it has no response.
I think my laptop is a Linpus Linux but it was originally a Windows XP (theres a sticker of it on it).
All I remember was I planned to reconvert the Linux to Windows XP so I installed Ubuntu Netbook Software with a flash drive.
However, as this was booted with the usb, it all of a sudden couldn't go past the Acer logo (blue screen) for awhile.
Now that it does, all I see is a black screen with what I described on my first post.

Complete newbie! Acer Aspire 1 boots with a black screen

I wish they had a Acer Aspire One for dummies.
I know I've posted this a few weeks ago, but there was no solution to my problem.

For about half a month now, my Acer Aspire One 110-1588 has been booting with a black screen and a black cursor the shape of an "x" bordered with white.
I've searched online already and I can't find what my problem is.
I'll try to be as specific as possible if you ask me some questions >_<..

Feels like pure X. Can you press ctrl+alt+f1 to get to a text login? Log in. Try entering: /etc/init.d/gdm restart (as root or with sudo). Did that take you back to the normal login screen? You didn't mention what distro you have installed.

Right now I'm trying to install Ubuntu as my distro but I can't for some reason. Just leads to its boot screen and stays there with the keyboard icon.

UPDATE: I've tried installing Ubuntu another time, but it's not working. Help is needed please ._.

One of my colleagues got the Acer Aspire One and it came it Linpus if I remember correctly and it came without X installed. It would not boot into GUI. But it was useless for her as she uses Windows XP for her and her daughters use. Anyhow,
You should be able to install some netbook version of Ubuntu or some smaller versions of some other distributions like Netboox remix or Puppy.
If your netbook specs permit, you can install some complete distribution with smaller footprint of X like Xubuntu or Lubuntu or even Debian with XFCE or LXDE. And you are a complete newbie and want to start off with Linux, Ubuntu and variants should be good place to start. Even Linux Mint should be a good distribution of choice. It is also based on Ubuntu. Netbooks generally do not have the optical drive but you should be able to install it using USB stick.
Creating bootable USB stick for Ubuntu should not be an issue though. Unetbootin should help you create a boot USB stick.

I'm kind of confused with the site you gave me? I installed the SystemRescueCd from the UNetbootin and put it in my 8GB Usb stick.
Plugged it into my Acer Laptop and it's leading me to a UNetbootin screen with Default as the only choise.

Theres Tab to edit optonis. And Automatic boot in 10 seconds repeatedly.

Why do you want to use System rescue CD as a distribution on your system? And the link that I gave is about Unetbootin that will allow you to create a bootable USB stick for varied distributions of Linux. Ubuntu is one of them. You may want to look into Xubuntu to run it on your netbook. Download the iso and use unetbootin to create a bootable usb and use it to install it onto your netbook. You can use Windows machine for all these tasks as well. So you do not need working netbook for all the stuff.
