Perhaps it's some kind of bug. But in general it shouldn't be something you HAVE to do you just can do it. First of all check lm-sensors and see is it because of heat or something else. Maybe command dmesg will show us something interesting.

Perhaps they already solved this one but some time ago UBUNTU was destroying disks because trouble with power savings. To do it manually use hdparm.

I think the best shot to start in fact is acpi. So look around how to disable it using grub. If I remember right without acpi I had to shutdown system than push power button to tern it off. Although for now we just want to know what is wrong...

It took me five seconds to find what you suggested just try http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=77497
In last post you have command....You should also have gnome applet shoving CPU speed.
And learn to use google.

heres solution it worked
you need to update the BIOS it seems.

an automatic way of doing so :
1: download and burn as ISO image (same as with ubuntu CD) : http://www.lesgrosbarbares.info/flashbiosacer_v1_43.iso
2: boot to this CD
3: should autoflash your bios...
4 reboot, all good
