you have to mount the cdrom first.
'mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom' should do.
if it asks for filesystem etc, just give auto or iso9960(right?)
ie
mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

that's not an error... CD's are supposed to be readonly... it's more of an informational message

Mount the cd like arunshivanandan mentioned above and do not worry about read only mesg.

actually its dir as well, and its not an alias or script its another executable like ls. im not sure what the difference is but there both executables(seen by output of file `which {dir,ls}`) and they both have man pages.

its best to check things before you post

oh and timmyk0 if you dont want to see that warning simply add -o ro to the mount command, you aught to consider putting an entry in your fstab to make the mounting simpler.

Make sure that you have put the CD/DVD before trying to mount it.(obviously)
Also, make sure that your DVD/CDRW device drive is /dev/cdrom
it could be /dev/cdrom1 or some thing else.(if it is an scsi type etc-it will be different.)
