access denied copying files
I'm brand new to Linux. When I try to use Konqueror to copy or move a file form my home directory to my wallpaper directory I get accesed denied. How do I get permission to write to this folder? Using Kbuntu 5.1 and konqueror 3.4.3.
TIA |
you'll only get a permissions issue if you are trying to copy files to locations outside of /home/username/ as you shouldn't do this. instead you should make a wallpaper diurectory local to your user

Change to Root user. Go to folder and rightclick it and choose properties, now your'e able to give yourself 'write' priviliges to that folder.
Or you can just right click the folder and choose 'actions' > 'open terminal here' Then just su into root and you will be able to write to the folder. Hope this helps you :) |
how do i change to root user in konqueror
I really am new to linux. I'm an experienced user in windows but i feel a little stupid at this point in Linux :)
Fedora core 4 had a super user (root user) file manager but I don't know how to do this in Kubuntu. |
I suppose you use two accounts on your system, a root and a 'yourname or something close' account?
Now login using the root account, copy the files that need to be copied, then login using your ordinary user account. |
tried root user in konsole
tried root user in konsole to mkdir wallpaper in my home directory and access still denied.
:( |
Only have one account
thanks for your help antiloaded.
I only have one account. Tried rebooting and still have access denied. Sigh... |
Your welcome ;)
But you were able to su into root using the terminal right? I mean open up a terminalwindow then type: su root then the password. I believe that this thread covers your problem: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=378369 |
forget all that, just put the files somewgere suitable in the first place. why should a scary admin account have anything to do with anything as petty as wallpaper???
|
success thanks
I was able to create a wallpaper directory in my Home directory using a root terminal, but still denied access to the original wallpaper directory. Thanks
More studying of the linux bash commands i guess. You've been a great help. By the way can you suggest an irc domain and channel for live linux chat? Thanks again |
To acid_kewpie: Well you got that right, but im also one of those who spends loads of time putting things in the right drawers...can't help it sorry. ;)
About the root thing it's also covered here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthre...ght=root+login No sorry i dont know any IRC Channels, or at least not any good ones that covers Linux, but they should be easy to find doing a bit of googelin... ;) |
If you created a directory within your home drive, but from a root terminal, it stands to reason only root will be able to access that directory. Simply create the directory whilst logged in as yourself and within your home directory. This is the one place you get to do whatever you want in! As acid_kewpie keeps re-iterating, there's no need to move things outside your home directory, especially for things like desktop themes.
As for live chat, hope this helps - http://www.ubuntulinux.org/community.../document_view |
thanks again
Do u have any irc suggestions?
