Access data on CD and DVD

I have read somewhere that if I want to access a CD, DVD or data on a pendrive I first have to mount the device.
I succesfully accessed data on a cd and I never used the command mount.

How is that possible?
I use Ubuntu 7.

Thanks.

Most distros these days use automount systems for removable media. They automatically detect the disk and mount it when you try to access it. This is mostly found in gui file managers like Nautilus or Konqueror, and if you try to access the drive through cli you probably still have to mount the thing manually.
