Unhappy AC97 sound doesnt work

Hey

I have no sound... when redhat 7.3 started up i used to get an error message saying it cant start sound

/dev/dsp (device does not exist)
using null output device

or something like that... cant be sure cos it doesnt come up anymore
it used to pop up everytime i started redhat... or fiddled with the sound section in the control center
dunno where the error message went?

What do i do?

i set up my modem by using "wvdialconf wvdial.conf"

is there a similar command for sound setup??

I am using onboard AC'97 on a Shuttle SN41G2 XPC (FN41 motherboard) if that helps any

Thanx in advance

Question

Someone has to know how to get it to work?

I was thinking about trying Mandrake but i wanna stick with Redhat 7.3 cos im using it at uni and all the lab guides and documentation we have is geared towards Redhat 7.3!

Can someone please help!?

I'll never learn anything without my MP3''s to encourage me!!

Which will also require a network to a W98SE machine! Which is my next big challenge after I get this going!!

Help the newbie

I also have the AC97 stuff .... using RH9.0 but when I do an autodetect soundcard it does detect it but also stating it does not support it.

Installed a new PCI sound card .... working (gave up on the AC97)

Cheers
Jamie

and i have these char-major lines....

Aug 20 17:51:06 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-204
Aug 20 17:51:06 localhost last message repeated 6 times

I have exactly the same problem when i tried to get my av'97 to work with rh9, still working on it, my av'97 is integrated with my Asus motherboard and i recently checked their website, and found that there is one av'97 driver for linux system, haven't tried it yet, cuz i can get my DFE 530 TXS net adapter work either(have tried any means i can think of and i can find on internet, still no luck), maybe you guys should give it a try tho, cuz they are the same chips, just different motherboard.

check it out @ www.asus.com , can't remember what the exact location is, try the support and download section. good luck.

Question So close!! ...need help

Hey!

I tried installing those alsa drivers... the newest one...
(its doesnt have AC97 listed in the shuttle section but i tried it anyway)

i did the ./configure --with-kernel=usr/

the help file said usr/src is the default but the files arent actually in there so thats silly!!

and it went right thru... the next step is "make install" and it say lotsa bad things

it looks thru the alsa file i downloaded and says there are several files are missing... here is what happens when i type make install:

rm -f /lib/modules/2.4.9-9/misc/snd*.o /lib/modules/2.4.9-9/misc/persist.o /lib/modules/2.4.9-9/misc/isapnp.o
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6/support'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `modules_install'.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6/support'
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6/acore'
mkdir -p /lib/modules/2.4.9-9/misc
cp snd-hwdep.o snd-page-alloc.o snd-pcm.o snd-rawmidi.o snd-timer.o snd.o /lib/modules/2.4.9-9/misc
cp: cannot stat `snd-hwdep.o': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `snd-page-alloc.o': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `snd-pcm.o': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `snd-rawmidi.o': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `snd-timer.o': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `snd.o': No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [_modinst__] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6/acore'
make: *** [install-modules] Error 1

why do we do make install?
the only other thing installed (gaim) had a make step in there first...

i tried that with alsa and it started scrolling thru a lot of code... then came to an end with more errors...

/usr/include/asm/pgalloc.h:6:24: asm/fixmap.h: No such file or directory
make[3]: *** [fastdep] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6/acore /oss'
make[2]: *** [_sfdep_oss] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6/acore '
make[1]: *** [dep] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/mr_svperstar/Downloads/alsa-driver-0.9.6'
make: *** [include/sndversions.h] Error 2

I've given so much info... why cant anybody help me?
