AC 97 sound/mounting cdrom snag

Does anybody have any idea's for my next step.

The SUSE 8.0 personal that I have got running is proving a bit of a pain.

On install, the sound seems to work. On reboot, the start up dialogue it gets to the starting sound device, then tells me that its trying to restore old sound settings and then hangs. If I disable the AC97 device it boots up ok.

Also, when I try and mount the cdrom icon, I get a dialogue box that tells me:

cannot mount device

report error
/dev/cdrom: Input/output error
mount: I could not determine the file system type, and none was specified.

For the first snag, I tried the idea from the elite k7s5a mainboard HOWTO - and no as far as I can find out I havem't got that mainboard, but there is a bit about AC 97 drivers being in the 2.4> kernels. when I tried the "modprobe i810_audio" thing? it gave me the stuff abit like in the HOWTO so I tried the echo "i810_audio>> /etc/modules thing and have got nowhere.

So does anyone have any ideas or hints, tips or links that I could try please?

I had an ac97 motherboard, it worked fine. I gave it to my old lady though, so now it has NT on it. you might try looking in /etc/modules.conf and see what the alias is. then try modprobe on it.

for the cdrom is this a data cd or a music cd your trying to mount?
/etc/fstab

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

a couple of snags

Thanks David

I'll give that a try, though I might end up asking again!!

My snag is being a total nugget, and I mean total and complete.

Who else but a total tit like me could manage to get himself locked out of satan's xp home and have to search ms using opera to suss out how to use the boot rescue that is included with patronising crap like ms stuff. Yep you guessed... a nugget like me!!!

me again

Just for info, i can get data disc mounted, but as for music... that is why I don't know is the fact that I currently have to have my sound disabled to prevent boot hanging and hence it does the input/output error thing

Nah that's probably bollocks as well

AC97/cdrom:-(

AAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh

God I really hate this bloody linux lark at the moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not just the "complexity" that's stressing me out but the lack of intuitiveness.

I means an OS that is as well evolved as linux/unix should not be such hard work as it is (well for dummies like me anyhow!!!)

it just pisses me off that every time I want to TRY and make a tiny little adjustment like some sound, I'm gonna have to spend the next 2 hours surfing god knows where just to find a small amount of info that might (and I mean might) point me in the right direction)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

TTFN
I think that i'd better go and get myself a brew!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't mount audio cd's, just use a cd player and it should work with the cd in the drive.

As for the AC'97 codec, I heard that it doesn't work with linux on SiS chipset boards (that might have just been intel boards though).
