About SIP calling

Hello,

I'm new to sip/voip and want to try it out.

I have a question about sip. Can sip make calls to people on other sip providers?

For example, if I have sip account with company X and my friend has a sip account with Y, can we communicate? Or are we only allow to make SIP calls if we're both on the same SIP provider?

Thanks

The latest episode of LAS has some info on SIP.

I don't know much about sips myself, but I understand that you need a trunk provider. Which would need to be an external service for over the internet calls. But I've never set it up myself.

Yeah, I'm very new to sip/voip as well.

I did watch the LAS AsteriskNow setup video a couple of days ago as I subscribe to their podcasts.

Anyway, I contacted localphone.com, my voip provider and he told me I can only make free sip to sip calls to other localphone.com users. Also, If I want to make and receive calls to/from PSTN, mobile phones and etc, I will need a DID number and pay usually fractions of a penny per minute to call those devices.

Thanks for the reply
