Hello saiju, welcome to LQ,

a very helpful guide through the first steps is here: http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz

For information about the commands see the manpages, for example
Code:

man tar
if you want to know more about the manpages, we have a howto here: http://docs.slackware.com/howtos:gen...es_efficiently

markush,
I read your reply and went to the slackware howtos and noticed this:

man -t ls | ps2pdf ->ls-manpage.pdf

I am curious what does the (-) hyphen in '->ls-' mean?

Fred.

I assume writing that bad is intended as a lame joke, rather than as a serious inquiry.

Do you mean:
How can I become more familiar with Linux and installation?

if can get? may me better; Do you mean If I can get?

Please write out your words in English and use capitalization and proper punctuation.
That way we can be able to read and understand you better.

That's quite a good question. I don't know exactly where the -> comes from, I found it in a documentation, it worked and so I've written it in the HOWTO. The commands are
Code:

man -t ls
formats the manpage for the ls command in a postscript file. ps2pdf transforms a postscript document to pdf (as the name says. "ls-manpage.pdf" is the name of the dokument.

I find criticism of OP's English somewhat disturbing.

Many folks for whom English is a second or even a third language come here.

I would recommend drilling down to the intent of their posts to criticizing their spelling and syntax. Heaven forbid I should try to post to a French language board in my high school French.

But that's just me.

OK

Thanks AnathanP, I was missing this, I'll change this command in the howto.

Maybe I guessed incorrectly. I never intend to criticize those who communicate poorly in English because it is not their first language. They all do better than I would do at any second language.

But some posts communicate badly in English because the OP thinks it is cute or funny to communicate badly. I don't see anything here to change my initial guess of that for the first post of this thread.

Notice also, the OP hasn't followed up on any of the help that was provided.

Ana..,
thanks that makes it plain but a note on Linux documentation, some, such as, "http://rute.2038bug.com/index.html.gz" is only free on line and not something you can take away and read. If you are short of a second computer, or do not always have link to the net, it makes it difficult to experiment.
Has anyone heard of anything similar to 'vimtutor' for unix/gnu cli?

Fred.

Here is an old one (archived at the Internet archive) that is actually quite fun to read. Newbie's Top Ten Commands:

I didn't take it like that, due to the notable absence of text-speek and l33t sp33k.

It seemed to me to be more likely posting too late at night, perhaps exacerbated by other pursuits, something I suspect many of us have done. I know I've made a couple of late night posts in my first language that required serious spell-checking before I clicked "Post."

I note that OP's profile seems clear of any questionable content.

Just me.
