about framebuffer

i tried some video outputs for mplayer with the command line like
this :
Code:
 mplayer -vo <videooutput>
i tried some videooutputs given by
Code:
 mplayer -vo help
and i figgured
Code:
mplayer -vo fbdev /mnt/cdrom/G3JoeSatriani.avi
worked strangely but nice.
well fbdev should mean framebuffer device.
Now it works very fast but it displays in two rectangles
of about 180x150 in my 800x600 upper display .
and the colors are really not all there.
there are missing colors.but it works fluently with no problems.
i had to try this because mplayer writes in my console that
my computer is too slow and i should try some of those
paramaters.
could someone give me some insight on this frame buffer device and
if there is any good player that can acces it directly or has
good support device drivers to cope with any video card?
