abiword spell checker does not work

Ihope this is the correct place to ask this question.
My ubuntu (lubuntu) installation came with abiword, which I like, but I can't get the spell checker to work.
I've tried various suggestions from Google but am floundering.

I tried looking for a dictionary in the places suggested, but I cant find one.

When you say that you are unable to get spell check working does that mean you are not able to use the spell checker?

Try this. Type the text and once you are done go to Tools | Check Spelling and it will check the spelling mistakes in the text for you.

If you are talking about meaning of words in the text then you can right click on the word and select GDict to find out meaning of word for you or you can select URLDict which is on internet to find out the meaning of word for you.

If still it doesn't work for you and it does not show you the option to check spelling then there might be a possibility that the package is not correctly installed.

You can remove and re-install the package:

apt-get remove abiword
apt-get install abiword

I hope this helps.

Under Tools the 'Check Spelling' is grayed out, and F7 gives a popup box 'The spelling check is complete' even whenthere are obviously mis-spelt words.

It sounds like you may just need to get a dictionary, or perhaps the actual spell-checker. I'm not sure what spell-checker Abiword uses, but I think it's Aspell, so make sure that's installed: have a look in the software installation tool. Also check to see if there is an English dictionary listed as available but uninstalled.

Did you try removing abiword and re-installing it as I mentioned in my previous post?

I just installed it on another machine and it did work. I mean I am able to do spell check. Appears to be something missing in the existing install.
