aaargh: bombs & exclamations background?

Absolutely fresh off the boat - turned on my brandy new dual boot SUSE 10 and Win XP machine. Logged in as root apparently, because that was the only PW I was given in the docs from the vendor. Found myself in SUSE but no cute little chameleon background. Bombs and yellow triangles with exclamation points! Decided it was best to leave discretely before I wrecked something. Logged off in shut-down from menu. So - my question is - how the heck do I log-in as just a normal user?

Go to the Menu, then to System and look for YAST.
Fire it up and look for the tab with Users on and add a user, then log out and back in as new user.

The bombs and exclamation marks serve as a visual warning that you are looged in as root and therefore whatever you do has the potential to effect the whole system.

Thank you!

Thank you, Sal, for your kind response. That sounds pretty simple...
I will try it as soon as I get home from work.
