If freshly installed programmes don't appear in you start menu (and most wont) I normally do this on command line:
locate name-of-installed-programme
(to actually find out where it is. You should see the binary pop up in this list, normally in a location like /sbin or /usr/local/bin)
then just type the name of the binary you just found which is normally the name of the programme, xmms for xmms, ogle for ogle etc.

you can also run kpackage and install the rpm file that way.

Thats how I installed wine.

Of course, but that still won't solve the problem of the installed programmes not popping up in the menu.
That has simply to do with the fact that the developers didn't programme that option in their installation files.

that is true.

but you can also start to associate file types so that they open with a specific program so the need to have the program in start menu is not hte same.

but you are totally right Anne.
