Talking A very (newbie) question about mounting

OK, I've tried mounting my cdrom and cd-rw with the very conventional way

mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrw

and the system answered that those are not block devices.

so I made 'ls -l /dev" to see if those files existed but they were not there.

my question is how am I going to mount my cdroms? (LG cdrom)
and how about usb (flash disks)? are they mountable or do I need something to be installed?

NOTE: running kernel 2.6.8.1

Are they IDE devices? Are you running with SCSI emulation?

Assuming yes and no, the devices might be /dev/hd{a,b,c,d} depending on how they're wired up and what your BIOS settings are.

Unless you're using udev. I don't know anything about that.
