a tool for rapartitioning?

I have read the installation manual for redhat 9.0 but can't find a way to do a non-destructive repartitioning.I think I need a non-destructive repartition tool because disk druid or auto might not help.I can't copy all that data from my d drive and save them in c drive.I got 6gig of free space. How can I do a minimal install wid kde enviornemtn?help

You may be contradicting yourself in the same sentence...
a non-destructive repartioning?
repartioning IS destructive...if you have already used all available disk space
What EXACTLY are you trying to do?

You don't have to delete an existing partition to add a new one, given
that you have available disk space.

You just need to resize partitions. Partition Magic is good, it deals with all types of Filesystems and I havent had a problem yet.

duerra 12-31-2003 10:21 AM

Partition Magic is exactly that.... magic. It's the God of partition resizing, creating new partitions, etc. :)

duerra: you might want to proof readyour signature... unless you really have a 1500 RPM hdd... :p

urka58 12-31-2003 11:22 AM

Try this. It works fine and is a recovery tool as well.

pnh73: hEhEhE... yeah, I like to make a moron of myself once in a while. ;)

The only reason I have that stuff there to begin with is because I have WAY too many questions (read: total newb), and I hate forgetting to post my specs for people whenever they need to know what's going on with my box =P

6 gigs of free space.... should be more than enough to do a redhat install

Partition Magic is awesome, definitely a worthwhile investment

If you don't want PM, you can try downloading mandrake linux's first cd and use their resize tool (which works quite well); just put it in your cd drive, bs the options and choose to resize your hdd with the free space; then let the installer run and when it asks for other cd's, just cancel, don't install a boot loader, and put in your redhat cd and use the newly created ext3 partition(s) and swapspace

*edit: also, tell us what disk druid shows as your current partition table

I know I don't wanan go out in the cold and buy a blank cd.I just want a guide to know how to use the repartitioning tool that will not delete everything in my d drive.

Partition magic is very idiot/fool proof. It will also handle NTFS filesystems exceptionally well, where fdisk will fail.

Partition Magic if you wish to invest [though i am sure there are other sources], is an extremely easy to use piece of software it is all point and click rather than fdisk or other command line software like parted in linux which are type and slip :p

However, http://www.systemrescuecd.org/index.en.html as mentioned by urka58 looks most excellent, with QtParted which I quote is "... a Partition Magic clone". As you might see from here http://qtparted.sourceforge.net/screenshots.en.html it looks very easy to use, much like PM.

That system rescue cd [and it could also be called a system prep disk] is only a 75mb ISO [download here http://www.systemrescuecd.org/download.en.html ] and saying "I don't wanan go out in the cold and buy a blank cd"... well, i could make many a comment about as cold as the weather... Dont you have any spare CD-RW's lieing around? I have loads for when i experiment with different distros. :D

HTH...

Can I use this system rescue disk to resize (reduce) a FAT32 D: drive partition under Windows to make enough room to add a Linux partition, or willl I have to empty the D: drive, resize with fdisk, and then be able to format the third partition to Linux?

Total newbie where Linux is concerned.

Thank you for any good advice.

Pingue

pnh73 01-03-2004 01:47 PM

Yes, the software should just be able to resize the FAT drive with no problems at all.

HOWEVER, I take no responsibility for financial, data or physical loss that may be caused by taking this advice. It is entirely at your own risk.

I would recommend that you backup ALL vital data onto a CD or onto a separate computer.

Pingue 01-03-2004 02:05 PM

Thank you!

I'll burn this rescue disc to CD and give it a try after I move all of the data to the C: drive.

Thank you for your help!

Do you have any advice on my other question about Booting and using a DVD in the newbie forum please?
