a question about logrotate?

I always have such error information for my daily corn job:

/etc/cron.daily/logrotate:

error: line too long in state file /var/lib/logrotate.status

What's the reason? Is logrotate.status read or written by logrotate? How to solve this problem?

Thanks!

"error: line too long in state file /var/lib/logrotate.status

Could you post your /var/lib/logrotate.status?

I guess the problem is such sentences:

"/var/log/mgetty.log.tty[^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.]" 2005-1-14
"/var/log/mgetty.log.tty[^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.]" 2005-1-14
"/var/log/mgetty.log.tty[^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.][^.]" 2005-1-14

right? The problem is who wrote this file, the system or user? Can I just remove these sentences?

Thanks!

"Can I just remove these sentences?"

That's a good idea. They were written on January 14. So I suggest you remove them and the error message should go away. If you get the error again then you might have to chase down which program is producing too long messages.

Looking at it I suspect that the error is two fold. It looks like somebody is trying to login using a repeated special character as a user name and then mgetty creates a too long error message when reporting the problem.
