A question about Gentoo installation

Hi,

I was trying to install Gentoo last night following the official installation guide. Everything goes smoothly. I have successfully installed the stage3 tarball and set up the profile. The next step will be Kernel configuration.

However, I found that after kernel configuration, the installation is almost done. When shall I copy all the softwares to the system? There is no step like "file installation...". I think the reason why we set up USE flag is to compile the system and install it. However, the official document does not memtioned anything about it?

Can anyone give me a clue about this?

Kevin

Well - basically it might be a good idea to go here and check with the docs for whatever you want to do.

This is your system - you will have to decide what you want installed above this (at least for the minimal install - I've never used the liveCD installer).

It sounds like you using the minimum install CD. When you emerge gentoo-sources and your kernel flavor gentoo installs the very "MINIMUM" amount of packages like grep and basic unix tools you would find on any distro. After that which mail client, logging application, web server you want to choose is completely up to you (the beauty of gentoo).

before you boot into your new system you should install a mail server ( i choose postfix ), logging application, and cron. Once you have those installed you have a very basic running box.
