A problem with minimodem

I saw a episode of Hak5 and used minimodem in the demo of moving data between computers without using a network or usb drives. I downloaded it to two laptops I have and discovered a problem one laptop is a 15in hp 2000 with a jack for headphones and another for a mic. The other laptop is lenovo flex 3 11in with a jack for haedphones and the mic. I can send data to the hp from the lenovo but can't send data from the hp to lenovo. I have tried different setting in the sound but no luck I also have tried a headset from a ipod touch and the mic input does work. Any help would be welcomed thanks.

First, welcome to LXQ. I'm assuming that you're referring to a combo jack (Lenovo)? If so, you may need to ensure that you have the correct adapter available to split out the headphone/speaker and mic connections.

If that isn't the problem, then you may want to tell us which distro (and version) you're using, and whether PulseAudio is in the mix. Sometimes, PA confuguration is required to select the correct audio sources and sinks. The 'pavucontrol' utility is good for that.

Not enough information to know if it is hardware or software.

You will need to elaborate on the cables / hardware you used. Did you hard wire the computers together or use microphones/speakers as demonstrated in the video? For direct wire the headset audio output from one computer connects to the microphone input of the other and vice versa. What makes it difficult is that each connector is different.

Buying cables that convert to phono will make things easier however, even though Hak5 inferred that you could connect audio cables between two computers it really is not that easy. The headset audio volume level and impedance is not the same as the microphone input. Speaker levels are very large compared to the very small microphone voltage. In addition, there could be small phantom voltage on the microphone input that you do not want to connect directly to the speaker output.

If using real microphones / headsets then it is a matter of enabling the microphones / headsets and setting the levels correctly.

I am using Ubuntu Mate16.04 64bit on the Lenovo and Ubuntu 14.04 32 bit on the hp. The cable is a regular 3.5 audio cable. I just hooked audio jack to audio mic jack on the hp and switch to the Head phone going from the hp to Lenovo. I hope this helps sorry for the delay answering

The Lenovo with a single jack for the headphones/mic is a 4 conductor connector versus the regular 3.5 audio cable is only 3. Are you using a splitter?
