First time linux user today, just hoping for a few useful links to get some software.

Depending on which distro you chose, you'll likely have a large quantity of packages available by default as long as you're connected to the Internet - find the "Add/remove Software" tool and browse what's available. As a beginner you may want to stick with distro provided packages until you're comfortable installing via other methods.

Well, for the specific piece of software you are looking for, try the vendors website. If that doesn't meet your needs then try being a bit more descriptive in your questions.

freshmeat and sourceforge for starters, however what distribution are you using? a lot of distributions have huge repositories of software that all you need to do is issue a command or run a gui tool and you have hundreds if not thousands of software packages at your finger tips without doing any searching.
