A dial-up connection
 

I just installed linux on my cousin's dell dimension. I'm not sure what the model number is. How do you setup a dial-up internet connection?

What distro are you using? If it is redhat type 'neat' at an xterm. As long as the modem is installed and working ok, you can set the rest up from there.

Ok, I am running RH9. I run the Internet Connection Wizard and it doesn't find my modem. So what do I do? Do I have to install it manually, I have no clue. If I have a driver for the modem how do I install it, and if I install it will the Internet Connection Wizard find it? I am a complete newbie to Linux, so please explain in detail. Thank you for your help.

If it doesn't find your modem you'll need to get drivers for it and install it. What type of modem is it anyway? If it is a serial modem it shouldn't be a problem getting it to work.

Let me know the type, make and model of your modem and I'll have a look for any drivers / info aswell.

If we do find drivers, the way we install it will depend on what kind of format we get the drivers in. Shouldn't be too hard any way : ) But one step at a time.

I am running XP on the same computer and the device manager says that it is a Dell Data Fax Modem. i am not sure what a serial modem is, I feel kinda dumb for not knowing so please explain. i hope this helps, if there is a different way to identify my modem please share it.. :) Thanks for the help.

Dell normally have pretty good linux support. Check there website first to see if there is any drivers and / or more info on the modem. A model number or something would be great.

I goto Dell and I enter my service tag number so they know what hardware my computer came with (I have never changed the modem) so I get a modem driver and I am sure that it is the right one. It is a .rpm driver so what is next?

Really, sweet, it couldn't be easier then....

download the rpm file and save it to a directory, let's say you save it to your /tmp folder, you would then do this as super user or root....

rpm -ivh /tmp/modem-driver.rpm and press enter.

obviously you would need to change where I have written modem-driver.rpm to the actual name of the rpm you downloaded.

Hopefully this works for you. On the dell site does it mention what version of linux that rpm is built for ?
