A Couple Of Questions From A Noob...
First off I'd like to say thanks for this forum. As a noob to linux it's exciting to see there is a place to go for help in the true tradition of free software for all. I can only hope that one day I will be able to be one providing the answers rather than asking the questions.
OK, I tried installing the Fedora core from a DVD that came with a Linux periodical. As I am dual boot with XP pro (at least until I become more confident with Linux) I was unable to get the GRUB to work correctly after several attempts. At that point I decided to go with Ubuntu 6.06-their dapper drake release from earlier this month.
I am unable to get my Lexmark X6150 printer to install in Ubuntu. I went to the Lexmark and they only had something called a Linux kit and it made absolutely no sense at all to me. Can anybody offer a solution to getting my printer online?
Next, whenever I switch from the Gnome to KDE environment the screen resolution is set too high and my old peepers just ain't working as good as they once were. So, if anyone can tell me how to set it to 1024 x 768 under KDE I would be most appreciative.
Finally, I would like to be able to try some other distros. I have two internal hard drives at 160 gb and 80 gb along with an additional 160 gb externak hard drive. The first internal drive has windows XP and the second one has ubuntu. I use the external drive for storage. Would it be safe to try another linux partition along with my dual boot set-up?
Thanks for your patience with this linux newcomer. I look forward to participating in this forum. maybe one day I can give XP the boot and set up 100% linux box.
Take care,
