9600pro on Mandriva 2005 LE

Hi

I'm completely neew to linux and i'm going to buy Mndriva 2005 LE. I have used Mandrake 9.2 once before and remember trying to play Tux Racer with me GeForce2 and having difficulty due to lack of graphics acceleration. Now I have an ATi RAdeon 9600 Pro and wondered if I will need to install drivers, and how EXACTLY i would need to do this.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dom

Welcome to LQ. There are many threads on getting ATI drivers to work under Linux (some indicating success, others failure) already here at LQ. To find them, click on the "Search" near the upper right hand corner, and enter your search terms. Good luck with it -- J.W.

Erm, if you get a "boxed set" disc then you can usually just do the install and it should see, install driver and configure the graphics card.

Similar to the nvidia driver, the only reason that it's not on the download version is cos it's a licencing issue. Even though it's free to download, it's not so free with third party distribution - other than "paid for" versions AFAIK!

If you get the "cheap" discs, then they are usually just supplying a pre-burned download version - which means that you end up doing the search like J.W. suggested and maybe posting further Q's here!

regards

John
