I'm trying to get 1280x800 on MEPIS 3.4 (I've read it's easier for MEPIS 6.x but I can't run that for all sorts of reasons). My laptop is a Philips Freevents x56 which uses the 950GMA Intel chipset. Using 915resolution on PCBSD previously did the trick, but I'm very unfamiliar with linux. Please help!

I've downloaded 915resolution and done the following:

cd /915resolution-0.5.2
make install

Now, what do I do now? Restart KDE? How do I make the resolution a permanent thing for KDE to boot up with (for both the root user and the default user?)

Ok. Rebooting KDE after that didn't give me 1280x800. I'm still stuck with 1024x768.

Ah. I restarted by pressing ALT+CTRL+BACKSPACE and I have 1280x800. But how do I make this permanent?

Thank you for the previous post, but in the meantime I fiddled around and found the answer. I was right to install 915 resolution, and to go through the steps I outlined earlier.

The additional thing to do was:

cd /etc/init.d
kate bootmisc.sh

and there, after the line [ -f /etc/default/rcS ] && . /etc/default/rcS

add this line:

915resolution 38 1280 800

And now when I reboot I have the correct resolution! yay!!!

Problem solved!!

if I also right-clicked on the Desktop, went configure > Desktop > Display
and checked the Apply Settings On KDE Startup box, as well as the Allow Tray application to change startup settings box.

Mustn't forget that.
