910901 - How to access samba shares via host-only adapter?
 

hi
using virtualbox, i've nat adapter and host-only adapter. host is Windows 7, guest is Ubuntu 10.10.
how can i access samba shares?
i could use bridge instead of nat before, and i had no problem. i could handle samba shares with ease. but now I HAVE FORCED TO SWITCH TO NAT. so please don't suggest me to still use bridge. just let me know is it possible to access samba shares via host-only adapter? is yes, how?
i've heard that i CAN'T access samba shares via nat, is it right?
but they say it's not a problem to use host-only adapter or Internal Network as well as nat.
also let me know what's the difference between Internal Network and host-only? i just needed a way to access guest via host. so i added a host-only adapter for this purpose.

I am also trying to solve the same pb for a long time, but couldn't succeed, however sharing what I concluded so far:
First thing is that both host and guest should be in same network domain i.e both OS should know each other using their hostnames or FQDNs. Ping each other using IPs will not help at all. Are you using any domain name service on your guest OS? If yes, then first start a communication between both OS and then you can install Samba on guest OS and can access Unix folders i.e. guest data from Windows though Samba or network shares.
On the other hand, just for sake of any data transfer, you can use software such as WinSCP. But that will also need networking between both OS.

both OSes may see each others by ping (host and guest), but u say it's not enough.
i don't know how to setup a DNS on the Ubuntu guest. i'm not so familiar with Linux yet. but i expect there be a way not to require this, although u say that it's required. when i don't refer to any name, neither in host nor in guest, why it must be required?! i know that samba shares may be available via host-only adapter, but i don't know how to setup this. i don't know why NAT must not work. but it's not a problem while i've to use host-only adapter for another purpose too.
so the main question gets:
how to setup samba shares through host-only adapter?
