64studio won't boot into gui

Hi guys,
I have managed to install 64studio (32bit) after having to turn back the bios clock to 2007.
Now when it boots I get the whole:

Quote:

begin: waiting for root file system........
check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev
ALERT! /dev/hdb1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
hda = primary master hd (storage - reiserfs, 2 parts) - MBR(?)
hdb = primary slave hd (many partitions)where 64 studio installed itself.

when i ls /dev, the only hd`s that turn up are hde`s, hdf's, hdg and hdet.
so i presumed that it had got confused somewhere, or just renamed the partitions, and that hde refered to hda and hdf refers to hdb. With that in mind editied the grub entry to root=hdf1 (with that being /) from root=hdb1.
Then on boot up i get:

Quote:

fsck.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hdb(*) -- * being any of the hdb (hdf) partitions i.e. this whole msg appears for all hdb partitions --
/dev/hdb(*):
this superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. if the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 fs (and not swap or anything else), then the superblock is corrupt and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193

fsck died with exit status 8
failed (code 8)
file system check failed
blah blah
in the maintanence shell, everything seems to be read only.

if i ctrl-d and continue the boot it gives me a cmd line login for 64studio but after msgs like

Quote:

mount: special device /dev/hdb8 does not exist
mount: special device /dev/hdb5 does not exist
(etc,)
syslogd: var/log/syslog: no such file or directory
]
]and a long list of no such file or directory or command not found

now there seems to be lots of things about mdadm and raid failures etc. I do have a raid card, but there are no hd's attached. the only two hd's are those two mentioned previously, and those are ide.

Now I know it would be really advantageous to post here my dmesg etc. but that computer is not yet connected to the internet (awaiting broadband activation) and the only other internet access is through a usb dongle.

If someone can tell me how to write the dmesg to a usb stick (or similar) from the command prompt in initramfs or bash, then I may be able to get it on here.

Also I have had kubuntu/ubuntu, suse10.4 and several other linux os on this machine in the past with the same hardware.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi, use redirect ">" to get dmesg to a file.

to add to an existing file use">>" With out quotes

Code:

dmesg > /media/win_c2/sorting/dmesg.txt
cheers, Glenn

Thankyou very much for that (should have looked it up my self really, just a little annoyed at this and the fact I seem to have forgotten so much about linux).

Here is the dmesg:

Its probably me having done/not done something stupid/basic etc..

Could this be either something to do with it getting confused between the naming of the partitions (hdbx/hdfx)?, or a knackered hd?

Thanks again in advance.

(sorry i had to do it in two posts, the damn thing kept tellin gme i had too many images!! (what images?) sorted it, my fault, sorry, was using quote instead of code

IDk about 64Studio security support, but Debian support for Etch ends in mid February.

Personally I would either install Debian or perhaps Ubuntu Studio, Rather than run a distro that is that old.

Thing is, its an equally old computer, and I have run into problems before trying to install an up to date distro on old equipment, besides this one wouldn't be on line, not the 64studio o/s at any rate so security isn't really an issue. Plus, if i was to dl another distro, i'd exceed my data quota for the month, although, having said that, there are only a few more days left, though it'll have to wait until next month so as not to any data/band width throttling.

I'll try that, but I'd still like to know, why at least, 64studio isn't going.

Thankyou for your replies.
