56K Modem help
Hi ,
I'm new here , just installed UBUNTU 11.10 on my PC I cannot get it to setup/recognize my modem. i looked at the UBUNTU official doc site, it seems to be mostly in french, so i thought i'd try here . my pc is a DELL Optiplex GX280 Win xp pro on /DEV/SDA1 UBUNTO (LINUX 3.0.0-12 GENERIC) on /DEV/SDA2 modem is a : PCI SoftV92 modem made by Conexant. The only modem driver file i can locate on the windows partition is a SETUP.EXE file Maybe i need a LINUX modem, i don't know, can anyone help me with this, thanks. best regards bob zimmermann |
This driver may work for you but you would want to double check that it does. Do an lspci to see your modems device info and compare to the list.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.
Your correct that you can not use the windows drivers. Here you go. The first step is to determine the actual chipset of the MODEM. http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/ |
That is what is called a soft modem or a winmodem. It is a software based modem. Rather than having a real hardware chip to do the work they relied on partial software to do processing.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Di...owto/Conexant/ Kind of old but most still applies. http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...dems_and_Linux http://linmodems.org/ |
thanks for that catch jefro, I thought this was a physical piece of hardware. Software emulated devices are usually only written for one OS, Windows 99% of the time, so getting it to work in Linux would require that someone has written a driver for the Linux os. Linuxant is your best bet but if its not there I wouldn't know where else to point you.

Windmodems are generally just a card with a UART and IO buffer on them, the actual "modem" exists in software, there is no hardware modem chip. Some can be made to work, some not.

Kustom42, you were correct in your first post. I just added in more data to the mix. Hope that was OK.
We just don't know how it is connected. |

Umm, I posted that link already. :)
