56K modem connection under Fedora 6
 

I am presently using my spouse's laptop with an internal 56K modem to hook up to the Internet. This laptop runs Windoze XP - shock, horror - but I have no choice because KPPP under KDE under Fedora 6 simply does not allow me to connect.

On this laptop, I simply specified the ISP telephone number, my user name and password, and voila - I am on the Net. Not so with KPPP, though.

I did the same under KPPP, I even tested the modem and brought up a terminal window, only to find out that I seem to get connected to the server, but nothing is happening.

My son who lives far away from here and who is very much into networking and the Internet, suggested that I should specify additional pppd arguments to modify the behaviour regarding LCP and header compression and the like. I had a look at the pppd man pages, but could not find anything helpful regarding LCP. I tried a few pppd arguments with KPPP which appeared to be useful, but to no avail.

All right, I am getting a broadband connection soon, but it would be nice anyway to know how to connect to the Internet using an external 56K modem with the KPPP dialer under KDE. Anybody out there who can solve this problem?

Do you get all the dialing tones and squeals when KPPP is trying to connect? or do you know that it's trying to connect? It'd be useful to see the pppd log, that should be saved somewhere in /var/log/... maybe it's inside the messages file (copy and paste the lines recent lines of pppd).

If you see some lines there that look like errors, post them here, or if they're obvious errors, fix them ;-)

in the case of internal modem first check KPPP has detected your modem or not................

but in the case of external modem follow this way.......
System --> Administration -----> Network
the "Network Configuration" will open.........
click on New--->modem connection (follow the instructions...)
from here do not forget to check your modem is detected or not.
(select the hardware option and then select your modem. after that click on edit menu.....and follow instructions)
remember the modem device is ttySX. (where x is numeric value just like 0, 1, 2............)
