Question 5610b U.S. Robotics Modem

I am new and will need lots of help, so here goes. I installed RH8 put in new hardware modem usr5610b, works fine in windows can't get it to work in RH8. I followed the directions in modem manual.

cd /dev
rm modem
ln -stty4

Used stty4 because I saw it on another thread that it needed to be linked. I then run minincom, it hangs I guess, the courser is a flashing box and I cant type any thing.

Help?

rm /dev/modem

kudzu
if it finds your modem it will make the link if not do this

then run minicom -s as root

Serial port setup

A

/dev/ttyS0

exit

if it fails to initialize go back and try ttyS1

and keep trying till you find the right one

then the link should point to it

ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem

Is this an internal or external modem.
Internal modem tend to be WINMODEMS which are not real modems because they use system resources to make them work.

External modems are real modems because they have their own parts.

You may want to check with your version of Linux to make sure it is compatible with it.

I unfortunatly have a great scanner for Vendow$ but so far have not been able to get to catch in Linux. I will eventually though.

Keep on rockin and keep the Penguin!!!!!
Hope this helps....

Thanks davidphillips. I will give it a try tonight and see how it goes. It is a internal hardware modem and it says it is compatable with linux kernel 2.3 and newer, but it uses COM5 and I think that is my trouble that and I have only messed with linux for two days.

Thanks

if it's com 5 you need to use ttyS2 on irq 5

something like this may work

/sbin/setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 5 uart 16550A skip_test

Thanks for the help. I got it working last night late, and I am using it to type this up. I used "wvdialconf" it scans my serial ports and got my modem information. Then i went in and set up a dial up connection and a modem it searched for modem and found it at port ttys4. I still had to figure out that opening the browser does not auto dial, but I am learning. Printed off what I got from here and started a note book, it is all I have right now.

Thanks
