I am trying to install SuSE 7 on an old 486 DX 100mhz with 16 megs of ram I was given it from a friend he was going to through it out, so after reading a magazine what is possible with old machines I thought I will give it a try, it had Win 98 on it so I got rid of that and installed SuSE7, with a default installation, that is a basic system but with KDE installed, but when it boots up I have to log in at a terminal window, type STARTX and then after a few seconds of activity it comes up with a message
"Fatal Server Error"
"No Screens Format"
X Connection to:0,0 broken ( Explicit Kill or Server Shutdown)

Any Ideas or will have to just deal with the Dos like window

For SuSE 7.x use sax or sax2. sax will help you set up XFree3.something and sax2 will let you set up XFree4.0.3(or whatever 4.x server is part of the pkg).

When you have a stable Xwin configuration (up and running and tested and retested...) you can tell SuSE to boot to your preferred Xwindows environment by using YaST. As the super user type 'yast' and go to " 'System Administration' ---> 'Login Configuration'. Select 'Graphical' and then tell it which window manager you want to use. Just make SURE you select a setup which actually works or you will have bootgrief!

You can also play with different windowmanagers by changing settings with susewm.

Re: 16MB RAM...
You would want to consider dumping the apache for thttpd or no http server at all.

xf86config works as well. you might want to also check out http://www.xfree86.org for compatibility for your video and monitor hardware. make sure there are no conflicts.
