32 bit to 64 bit hung at boot

I recently upgraded my 32 bit ubuntu 12.04.1 to 64 bit 12.04.1 to run a program I need for school. The installation went fine, but now when I try to boot, it goes to a blinking cursor after I select the kernel. Any ideas as to what could be my problem?

How would I go about upgrading the grub to work with the 64 bit?

I initially thought this was a grub problem, but I am beginning to think it is a graphics related issue. Here's why: I can sometimes boot, but it takes 30 seconds of staring at a black screen with a blinking cursor. Other times, the black screen after selecting which OS to boot never goes away. I think that something fishy is going on with the 64 bit driver. It also always hangs in the same place when booting in recovery mode. I'm going to attach a screenshot of that if I can figure out how.

What does "upgraded" mean?

I assume you do not mean that you started with a fresh partition and installed 64 bit Ubuntu from scratch. But if you don't mean that, I'm not aware of a valid method. Do you have a URL for whatever instructions you followed?
