32 bit software on 64 bit ubuntu....

Hi all,

Okay, I have a laptop with 8gigs of ram running ubuntu-pae 10.04 32 bit. Everything is great and I can see all the 8gigs of ram etc.

Now, I am also running virtualbox (loading xp) that can only "see" 2560k ram, apparently this is a limit for the 32 bit version.

Sooooooooo, I was wondering, could I install the 64bit ubuntu and

#1. Can I still run native 32 bit ubuntu programs like SlickEdit etc?
#2. I will need to install the 64 bit Virtualbox, can I run the 32 bit windows?

Thoughts?

BTW, Dell latitude, 8 gigs, I7 M620 @ 2.67ghz (4 cores)

Thanks!

I don't know about the specifics, but I run x64 ubuntu and have never had any problems installing any x32 software. I do vaguely remember one time when I was trying to install an emulator for the Nokia N900 phone that it didn't like installing in an x64 environment, but I think cases like that are rare...

Okay, and just looked on the Google and found this (third post down) which pretty much backs up what I said. With regards to the x32 XP in x64 Ubuntu, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work and can't find anything on the web which suggests it wouldn't work

I assume you mean that is a limit of the 32 bit version of virtualbox (as opposed to a limit of the 32 bit version of xp). I don't know about virtualbox.

How much memory did you hope to use in the 32 bit version of XP inside virtualbox? Or am I misunderstanding your goal?

32 bit XP will limit you to significantly less than 4GB. Exactly how much less depends on memory mapping details in the underlying platform. For virtualbox, I have no guess.

Installing 32 bit applications in 64 bit Ubuntu can be a little tricky (identifying dependencies and getting .so files of the dependencies into the right place). But once installed properly, there should be no problem running them.

But why would you prefer the 32 bit build of SlickEdit etc.? It would be easier to install the 64 bit build.

I have no knowledge about running 32 bit Windows in 64 bit Virtualbox, except that even if PAE plus enough ram is available to 32 bit Windows, it still won't use PAE to access a full 4GB of ram.

I usually run vmplayer but I run 64 bit os on a fully supported processor and motherboard for virtual machines. I run bios setting for vm isolation. I can run any amount of OS's in any bits and any available memory. So it may be your processor, motherboard or bios settings. I suspect virtualbox would be equal to vmplayer in that it would support your guest fully.
