password protecting a directory in a website

How can I set up a username and password to protect the 'admin' directory on my website? Its hosted on a shared server. I only have FTP access to the site.

That's one of the vaguest questions I've read today and is somewhat homeworkish

Seriously though, you must be more specific: What behavior are you referring to?

In the same realm as .htaccess, there's .htpasswd and httpd.conf which are all equally important in their own way.

EDIT: I think '.htpasswd' might actually be '.htaccess' -- you'll hafta check

Cheers
Sasha
