2 questions

1.) I have many large tmp(followed by random letters and numbers) files in my root folder. What are they and do I need them?

2.) Occasionally I need to run windows programs and there is no linux alternative. I find wine to be less then great and in fact it crashes and doesn't work. Whats the best way to run windows software? (virt box and winxp install)? My laptop is old and very slow so virtual machines run like crap.

What are the files? Can you post the output?

Use WINE or a VM...another option is find the Linux FOSS alternative.

as to #1 ?
why are you running Ubuntu as ROOT

log in as a normal user and use the default "sudo" that ubuntu uses

there should not be any files with "tmp"in the name in the /root/ folder
as in there should not be anything like this
/root/tmp14hj47uil;5c48tr

now there might be something like that in the TEMPORARY folder " /tmp "

as to wine crashing

what are these unknown windows programs ???

and have you read the Wine.hq page
for instructions on using wine
and used "wine-tricks"
or
even added the needed MS Windows *.dll's that might be missing

One, when posting output please use code tags as it's easier to read for us :-)

You can run this to see what's accessing these files...

Code:
for tmpfile in $(ls -1 tmp*)
do
  fuser -cu ${tmpfile}
done
Also, you can do this...

Code:
for tmpfile in $(ls -1 tmp*)
do
  file ${tmpfile}
done
One last thing...not sure what you're running as root...but you shouldn't be in Ubuntu
