2 Newbie Questions ...
 

Hi.

I am planning on setting up a Linux Server ( I think I will be using Red Hat ... I'm having a friend help install, set it up )

Anyway, I've been reading up on linux and seeing that I can point my domain name to my server.

I've already checked, and I can get a 2nd IP address, and will be buying a router.

My questions are :

1. How do I point my domain name to my linux server? ( Currently, domain name hosted through hostway.com ... ) I was told to change the DNS address. ... Okay, do I put my server's IP address? ... But, what if I am wanting to host a few domain names to point at different pages??

2. Once I get a domain ( or domains ) set pointed to the server, how does one set up e-mail addresses? ( My domain name is thedotsmatrix.net ... I'd like some like admin@thedotsmatrix.net, support@thedotsmatrix.net, etc )

How do I do this?? I hope its not all that difficult, although I am willing to learn ...

the link below is for fedora core (3 and 4) they should point you in the right direction on what you need to do. Just a warning. Postfix can be a pain for a noob. Be sure to follow the instructions.

So, I should install Fedora instead of Red Hat? ( I don't know much about Linux ) ... but am wanting to run a Linux Server to host free / cheap websites and MUD games.

My friend who is helping me is an assistant Unix admin for a government lab, so I won't be totally lost, but I am trying to do a lot of the work before hand to know what I need before I have her work on this. :)

If you want a Red hat server that's up to date, but don't want to pay for the Enterprise Server, get CentOS. It's Red Hat based with all the logos and names stripped out. Fedora is a bleeding edge product and is not considered (or meant to be) stable.

Yeah, my friend has some Red Hat CDs, as she has to use Linux a lot as well. I am just wanting to make sure I pick the right one, and know what other software will be needed to be able to run a web host / mud host / domain host / e-mail service.

I read the link that was posted above, and see that I can use Red Hat, but would need ISPConfig software.

Is there anything else I should get, or would this be good enough?

you don't need ispconfig. It was just a link showing how to set things up. There are lots of tutorials on the web to do what you are trying to do. I just merely posted it to get you started in the right direction. Google is your friend :)
