XP running on one machine, RHE3 ES running on another
D-Link DI-604 router providing network & WAN

But only one keyboard, mouse & monitor

What's the best (and free if possible) way of bringing up the Linux machine in Windows?

bringing up? as in regurgitate? :)

you presumably mean you want to see the linux desktop from windows... easiet way wold be a vnc server running on linux. http://realvnc.com but there are other more comprehensive ways.

and if you don't mean the desktop... just use ssh to get a shell login. puTTY is a good windows ssh client

You could use a KVM switch. A KVM switch allows you to switch your keyboard, mouse and monitor from machine to machine.

but I'm cheap ..

I would say it the following way.
Put the display+keyboard on the Windows system.
Install vnc for Windows.
Configure the server being listening on the network to the linux box.
Reboot the Windows system.
Verify that the vnc server starts automatically.
Go to the Linux box.
Donwload vnc for linux. Probably there is already a vnc delivered with your Linux distro, else download it from the internet.
Start vnc client.
Give the address of the Windows system.
You should see the Windows desktop.
Then, leave definitively the keyboard, moude and Display on the LInux box, and access the Windows box from vnc.
Personnally, I have an Icon on my KDE desktop, I simply click on it and I am on the Windows system console.
