2 different questions about mail messages

Howdie~

I'm running a webserver using apache. I'd like to figure out a way to have my server send me an IP log of 'visitors' to my site. Is it possible to make a script that will email me a list of the IP's?

&

Whats the best way to access the messages mailed to my root account by my systems? I'm using mozilla to get my regular user mail right now. But I'd like to be able to get my root messages and regular mail at the same time. I have two machines, machine #1 runs apache and sendmail- machine #2 is my personal workstation. I can get my mail from my ISP and sendmail server accounts, but I haven't been able to make an account that will get my root messages from both machines.

thanks

finger

there are many apache log parsers and formatters. A quick search on freshmeat.net will give you a number of choices. To mail them just pipe the output through sendmail. (sendmail the mail sending program, not sendmail the MTA by the same name).

If the server isn't to do anything with mail other than send you the periodic message, I have grown quite fond of nullmailer. Personally I use qmail for "proper" MTAs.

The solution to your second question lies either in some kind of forwarding mechanism or, and this is my recommendation, don't send them to root. cron scripts can be told to pipe to email admin@domain and have the admin account a forward or something.

I administrate over a dozen servers in probably as many locations -- not a single one ever emails root.
