2.6 kernel for RH9?
 

i m a new user of linux . i have red hat linux 9 (2.4 kernel) version but now i want red hat linux(2.6 kernel) version. i dont know from where to get this version . i am doing embedded systems programming so to create device drivers i will require this 2.6 kernel version . Can you suggest me the name of magazine or journal with which i can get copy of the upgraded version. Or aqny other way to get this latest version.

do you really think a dumb title like that is gonna make you friends? you can only get a new version of the Linux kernel by sending a $100 cheque to Linux Torvalds. no other way around it, sorry. well, that or use kernel.org

But be sure to try acid_kewpie's suggestions in the order he suggested them. Otherwise it won't work.

I will gladly email you a copy of the needed kernel, but i'll have to charge a $99 processing fee.

Since RH9 is obsolete, the BEST and EASIEST way to get a 2.6 kernel is to simply install a more modern distro.

If you like RH9, then you might want to try Fedora 6. Otherwise, head over to distrowatch.com---anything in the top ten on their "hit list" should be fine.

Personally for a true embedded device I don't think I would start with a full distro.. lots of bloat and things you won't need..

OK... I have edited your title, you clearly weren't
making friends.

As for the question: I'll go with the person suggesting
a newer distro; why? Because 2.6 depends on a few
things that 2.4 doesn't need (e.g. udev, which most
likely won't be available for your old dog of a distro
and newer versions of many of the build-tools; it would
take you considerable time to try and update all of those
manually).
