1st Post - Linux Upgrade 14.04 --> 16.04 Problems.
Hi all,
My 1st post on here so please be gentle. I am looking for a little help or advice on an issue im having. I am a real Linux novice but have had a HP Microserver Gen8 with Linux Server on for a while. I run a RAID0 (2 x 3TB) and a boot from a USB. I decided earlier that upgrading from 14.04 --> 16.04 was something i just had to do. <O> The upgrade all seemed to be fine until it rebooted and then went into Emergency mode. I removed a stale entry from my fstab dir and a few other tweaks and ive managed to get it on at least but it is far from happy. I did a quick "systemctl status" and got this. ● NAS State: degraded Jobs: 0 queued Failed: 5 units Since: Fri 2016-08-26 17:24:21 BST; 3h 28min ago CGroup: / I ran a "systemctl list-unit-files" command and can see the following disabled. acpid.service disabled console-getty.service disabled console-shell.service disabled dbus-org.freedesktop.network1.service disabled dbus-org.freedesktop.resolve1.service disabled debug-shell.service disabled keyboard-setup.service disabled rsync.service disabled serial-getty@.service disabled systemd-bootchart.service disabled systemd-networkd-wait-online.service disabled systemd-networkd.service disabled systemd-resolved.service disabled wpa_supplicant.service disabled ssh.socket disabled systemd-networkd.socket disabled ctrl-alt-del.target disabled exit.target disabled kexec.target disabled poweroff.target disabled reboot.target disabled rescue.target disabled runlevel0.target disabled runlevel1.target disabled runlevel6.target disabled Im not really sure where to look next or what to try. Im open to anything and even a rollback to 14.04 if it is an option. Thanks in advance for any help. Martin |
Welcome to LQ.
The only thing that has me confused a bit is that you're booting from a USB. I'm not a server type of person, so maybe that is usual. My thinking is that the install is on a USB stick or drive, and your data is elsewhere? To me I'd have a boot USB media which contained 14.04 and then an entirely different USB media containing 16.04. If I'm off base with this thinking, then I'd try to roll back to 14.04 and do a full install of 16.04 rather than an upgrade. |
Hi there,
Thanks for the reply. Yes i have a USB for the Linux OS and the 2 drives as raid0 for all my data. The usb had 14.04 on and i have upgraded on the same stick. Your idea of installing on a sperate USB doesnt sound like a bad idea right now! :-) Are there any decent instructions on roll back anywhere? I have done a quick google and it seems the answer is reinstall rather than go through the heartache of rolling back. |

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah lesson learned here on the backup. Could i get my RAID moved across on my seperate drives to my new fresh install or will that have to be done again? If i copy my mdadm config across, will that work? |
