160 Gb harddisk fromated with etc3 seems to contain more then is on it
 

i have a harddisk that is 160 GB labeled. linux says 156.328 GB. this drive is on my RedHat 9 Linux server and i have set it up as a networked drive on my XP computers. the thing is that when i select the properties in windows for the drive it says that 1. it is 150 GB drive. 2. it says that the drive has 9.01 GB of data on it when the actual size of the data on the drive is 3.9 MB. my question is: Should i be concerned about this number difference or not and if possible is there a way to fix it?

Don't know about the second problem, but the labeling issue is caused by drive makers counting megabytes as 1000k instead of 1024k to make the size of the disk seem bigger.

PS It's EXT3 not ETC3; "extended," not "etcetera"

the 160 is the manufactur's label. i can understand a little loss of space like the loss of alomost 4 gig. thats ok the issue is windows says its 6 gb smaller then the drive is after formating. but should i be worried about the fact that it says there is 9 gb of consumed space out of the 150 and it really only has 3.9 mb used

Seems like you are planning on using the drive from Windows.

Don't know what you are using to look at the drive, but it's obviously not smart enough to recognise or account for the journal data.
If you want to safely exchange data use VFAT.

im useing the server as a file storage server the rest of my net is pc currently

Samba should share it ok - I thought maybe you had Windows on the same machine, and were trying to use it in Windows as well.

syg00 u got a Aim account or somthing simmilar so that it is easyer to ask u questions instead of waiting for web sites to load and be checked

Don't ext2/3 filesystems save some space for only root use in case something goes wrong? Could be that?

ya they do but it did that and took the original 3+ gb that reduced the partiotion to the 156.*** gb. so i doubt it

i have a similar issue. one of my ext2 drives which is supposed to be 40gb worth of space is telling me its 100% full... but it only has about 11gb on it. Frustrating!
