0.227089 PCI:failed to allocate mem resource #6:10000@fd000000 for 0000:01:00.0
 
Hello All, Setting up an old Dell Dimension XPS R450 machine with Debian 5.0.1 to be used as a file & printer server. The machine has 128MB of RAM and 14 GB harddrive. I've gotten it installed and have internet & local network connections. However on boot I receive the above error message and cannot mount either the CD-Rom nor the tape drive. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Considering the age of the system, you might consider running a memory test to scan the physical memory for errors at bootup. You can do this for example with Debian:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny/memtest86

Any live distros and the UBCD should have this tool as well.

Just a thought.

Sorry, I was assuming too much knowledge. With that link I didn't mean you should download it from the website, I was just showing you the Debian package you could use to test memory. In fact, you probably already have the package installed.

BTW, I misled you slightly, you should probably use the package memtest86+ instead of memtest86. Apparently, the difference is just that memtest86 is the original but hasn't been updated since 2004, whereas memtest86+ is more up to date. There is an entry in Wikipedia for more info.

To check if a package is installed (and to install it if it's not), you use the Debian package management. You can, if you prefer, use a GUI—in that case use Synaptic. (In Gnome, System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager) On the forums it's easier to explain using the command line interface (CLI), so I'll use that instead.

Open a CLI (such as Terminal), and become root by typing 'su' (without quotes) and entering your root password. Then enter

apt-cache policy memtest86+
If after "Installed:"it says (none), then it isn't; if there is a version number there, it is.

If it isn't installed, type

apt-get install memtest86+
and apt-get will download and install it for you.

Make sure you know a bit what you're doing and pay attention while installing and removing packages, as you can potentially break your system--especially if using testing or non-standard sources with stable.

Note that whenever you edit /boot/grub/menu.lst (also as root) you should always make a backup copy first, in case anything goes wrong. It's a good habit to use the date in the filename, for instance, you could:

Thank you for the specifics. When I googled my error message I had found 3 posts similar to my issue but none that directed me to memtest. I did find the memtest86+ from the debian site after your initial post. I've been away from Unix/Linux for a long time and am very rusty. Things are slowly coming back.

which leads me to think that there may be a driver issue. I've also been able to boot from the Debian CD.

I suggested memtest86+ just because you were reporting memory allocation errors on an older machine.

In fact, I'm not sure what the actual problem is. If I understand you right, the main issue is that you aren't able to mount the CD-ROM and tape drive. Can you as root? The first place I would look is user permissions.
