In shell globbing, it's the same thing, basically, except Linux doesn't treat extensions specially so that *txt will match foo.txt. In regexes, it's a '.' meaning 'any character' while '*' means 'zero or more of the preceding character'. (I think. Need to read a man page again to make sure.)
