mention is made of unix and bsd styles and I am wondering if so called update included updated kernel?

under /boot/config/

could mr Coder indicate if under # General setup....he has
CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT=y
CONFIG_BSD_PROCESS_ACCT_V3=y

and yes I am fishing for an explanation

well that rules that out....I was hoping top line of kernel config was n which might explain why slowcoder was not getting uid info on the assumption that your source kernel/include/linux/acct.h relates to the error.....but I did forewarn I was fishing.

usernames longer than 8 are truncated

Note that usernames longer than 8 characters long are truncated by ps, by default.

You can overcome this by specifying an acceptable length for usernames to be displayed. To allow usernames up to 16 characters long, use:

ps -e -o "pid,user:16,command"
