'Normal' vi different from 'Redhat' vi

Hi,

I used redhat for about 1 year, and got accustomed to using vi there. I easily understood what was going on at all times. But I switched to slackware now, and vi is not the same. Probably redhat changed their vi, but all I am essentially looking for is a normal functioning backspace and delete key. I know vi has its own ways, but 10 years of experience with using backspace and delete are hard to get rid of.

Sorry if I am missing anything ish..

PS: I know I can use other editors, but pico takes to much space on the screen for layout in my opinion, and vi is a very powerful editor which power I'd like to keep

RH: ln -s vim vi
Slack: ln -s elvis vi

That's all.

Cheers,

I tried both elvis and vim, but not in command nor input/replace mode does backspace remove the character before the cursor, and delete remove the character the cursor is on. At some times it performs some funky capitalizing things tho

Should have been more clear, sorry

I'm a dead dead rat... (as in I used to use it and had to search for a bloody long time to solve this problem when I switched to slackware!)
in your .vimrc file add the lines:
Code:
set nocompatible
set backspace=2
additionally, if you want syntax highlighting add also:
Code:
syntax on
