I used redhat for about 1 year, and got accustomed to using vi there. I easily understood what was going on at all times. But I switched to slackware now, and vi is not the same. Probably redhat changed their vi, but all I am essentially looking for is a normal functioning backspace and delete key. I know vi has its own ways, but 10 years of experience with using backspace and delete are hard to get rid of.
Sorry if I am missing anything ish..
PS: I know I can use other editors, but pico takes to much space on the screen for layout in my opinion, and vi is a very powerful editor which power I'd like to keep
I tried both elvis and vim, but not in command nor input/replace mode does backspace remove the character before the cursor, and delete remove the character the cursor is on. At some times it performs some funky capitalizing things tho
I'm a dead dead rat... (as in I used to use it and had to search for a bloody long time to solve this problem when I switched to slackware!)
in your .vimrc file add the lines:

set backspace=2
