This is what happens when i try to install Mplayer:
"[root@localhost ~]# yum install mplayer
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
atrpms [1/8]
http://dl.atrpms.net/fc5.0-ppc/atrpm...ta/repomd.xml: [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404: Date: Mon, 14 May 2007 11:32:38 GMT
Server: Apache/2.2.4 (Fedora)
Content-Length: 319
Content-Type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1
Trying other mirror.
Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: atrpms
failure: repodata/repomd.xml from atrpms: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from atrpms: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

This also happens if i try to update my yum or install any other thing
I can only use my internet connection in Firefox to browse the web

Update: When i messed around in the network settings and all that i got an error message saying: "System.config-network:
The ethernet card could not be initialized. Please verify your settings and try again.
Command failed: /sbin/modprobe Gelic Network Driver

Output:
FATAL: Module Gelic Network Driver not found
"
so it seems like i need to install this driver but then again if i find it i most probably won't be able to install it

Hey, I am new to anything linux.

I have gone through the steps of installing Fedora Core 5 as advised many places on the internet. However, I never get the oportunity to make a password even though the Fedora DVD does install all 100 % of the program. When it finally ejects the dvd and asks me to put in the add-on cd it is quickly followed by a "install cancelled" message. I have tried to unplug the keyboard during installation as well but little it helps.

A couple of things that I do notice to be peculiar is this message before I write "install-fc sda". It says "Header V3 DSA signature: No key ID
4f2a6f2d"

Furthermore, after about 38 % of installing it says "No uuid done"

Does anyone know what this means? Please HELP

Hi linuxpeter,
It looks like you hit a key after starting the install.

After you chose the install type (I chose ``full install'') and hit enter,
it is essential that you don't hit a single key, move the mouse or do any other input,
until you get asked to insert the add-on cd. Any other input will be interpreted as
the answer ``no'' to the question ``do you want to install the add-on cd''.
But without the add-ons, your installation won't run.

Hope I could help.
cheers!

No, I don't think that this makes any difference.
Just don't do anything at all after you started the Fedora install.
(Really don't do anything. Don't remove or plug in any device, press any key or move the mouse.)

Erhm..

Everything works fine now with the dvd and the add-on cd untill I need to choose a password. Then I cannot enter a single letter, only the return button works. Hitting this button twice will not give me access after "reboot" since I still need to deliver a password. What is going on, any ideas?

What do you mean by: "I cannot enter a single letter" ?
Under Linux (and almost all other operating-systems) the password utility does not show any echo.
That means, when you set a password, nothing (not even starts or some other character) shows up on the command line. Nevertheless, you can set a password. Also note that you cannot use the backspace or delete character in those cases.
So I guess your keyboard works just fine.

Yep you are right about that and its up and running. However, it seems impossible for me to change the date and time. I have chosen the right time zone but it tells me to write the password when changing the time. Problem is, there are no places in the box to type it???

Furthermore, I cannot change the color on the screen (its green) because the display box wont start up? The green color is due to the fact that the PS3 had its audio and video set up changed during the weekend but I reset it yesterday. For some reason the linux system has that problem???

How do you want to change the time? via the ``date'' command?
I set the time via NTP, but I don't know if you have internet access right now.
Furthermore, you have to be root to change the date/time.

What to you mean by ``screen''? Are you referring to the text console or to the graphical (X11) console?
And what to you mean by ``display box''?
If you want to say: ``I don't have a graphical (X11) console'' then change in the file

/etc/inittab

the line

Code:
id:3:initdefault:
to

Code:
id:5:initdefault:
and reboot your PS3.

This should give you the ususal Fedora graphical login window.

Thanks a bunch but things with the screen is already working again. I don't know what the problem was. My only concerns now are the setting for date/time and the web browser issue. As for the time issue it asks me to change the time to the desired and the type in the password but there isn't any place to do it? I am not sure what you mean by "you have to be root". I login via root and the password when I enter the Fedora system. About the web browser I have tried to disable fire wall but it didnt work. As for setting up the server (if that should work) I wouldn't know how.

Once again, thanks for all your help.

I assume you change the time by typing
Code:
system-config-date
or
Code:
system-config-time
If you haven't tried this yet, try it. It should work. Likewise, you can setup your network stuff with
Code:
system-config-network
. Note that this is not specific to the PS3. This is the same for all machines running Fedora Core.

In all un*x-like systems, there is one user who has permissions to do everything. This user is always called "root". Normaly one should not do everyday work such as browsing the web or writing documents as the root user. The risk of trashing your installation are too high, and the security of your system might be compromised. Read any introductory book about Linux or BSD on the subject.

Hm, maybe the permissions for the /tmp/ directory were not set correctly.
type
Code:
ls -ld /tmp/
If you see this: drwxrwxrwt 4 root root <whatever> /tmp/
you are fine.
If you see this: drwxr-xr-x 4 root root <whatever> /tmp/
you have to change it.
Type:
Code:
chmod a+rwx /tmp/
chmod +t /tmp/
Again, this is not specific for the PS3, this is a general concept on all un*x like systems.
(Hint: read about "chmod" and "sticky bit" on the internet. There's plenty of good documentation.)

If you already are connected to the internet, you can start the NTPD (network time protocold daemon) via
Code:
/etc/init.d/ntpd restart

Once again, thanks for all your help.
You're welcome
