[FC4] How to change elements in 'Applications' menu?

Hi!
In Fedora Core 4 you have this Bar, or Panel on the top of your screen.
There are three main fold-out menus 'Applications', 'Places' and 'Desktop'.
I'd like to change elements in those menus, like deleting links, adding new, or changin them, so they point to a different location.

Especially the 'Applications' Menu is the one I'd want to reorganize a bit.

Please tell me how to do this and thanks in advance!

There is, I believe, a description of how it's done in the help file. I read it once, and decided it was just to silly to go through all those hoops just to change some menu items.

That's why I switched to the KDE disktop, where there's a nice "menu editor." If you'd like to try that, just installe KDE, and then use the desktop swithching tool to switch.

You might have already installed KDE: you can check by clicking on the "selection" button on teh GNOME login screen to see if KDE is listed.

Each entry is currently a separate file that ends in .desktop, and there are menu editors out there. I think there's a couple at GnomeFiles. I think the next version of Gnome is supposed to come with its own menu editor, but until then, this is probably your best option. You can, in theory, change the files yourself, but that's a pretty daunting task, depending on what you want to do.

Switching to KDE solely because of the ability to edit the applications menu really seems to me like selling your 2004 car and buying a 2005 car ONLY because you like the car's logo badge color better. It's just not a big enough deal.

Hmm, before i surrender the text editors and go for a menu Editor, i'd like to take a look at the files. Where do i have to look to find the specific .desktop files (i.e. Directory)?

Well, they're all over the place. Applications may place their .desktop files pretty much anywhere they want. So you may have to look around to find a specific one.

To find them all, cd to "/" and use this command (as root, or sudo it), and wait a while until they're all found.

Code:
find -name *.desktop

by the way, you'll probably find that most of them are located in /usr/share/applications, but many will also probably be in various directories in your home directory.
