Question [debian]X Envoirment

Hello
I have problems with my kde on my linux debian. It should be automaticly started when it boots but after some flickering(or whatever you call it) it doesn't start it, its like when you start a shell but then fullscreen.
When i run startx it sayd:
Fatal server error: No screens found.
I have changed my run level but that didn't help(changed it back now).
I also runned xf86config after i configured it and rebooted it it still doesn't work.
Any ideas what to do?
thanx Hylke

edit the screen information manually in

/etc/X11/XF86Config

so when you are in a shell type

vi /etc/X11/XF86Config

change the part that says monitor to the correct settings mine looks like this

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName "LG StudioWorks 74m"
        DisplaySize 320 240
        HorizSync 30.0 - 50.0
        VertRefresh 50.0 - 90.0
        Option "dpms"
EndSection

if you do not know how to use VI download a short manual on it or use another CLI text editor

the settings file for the xserver is not: /etc/X11/XF86Config
You need to modify : /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

This is told by you in the installation process.

Anyways, you can use: # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

The 'no screens found' refers to not been able to find a 'good combination' of the necesary devices.

A 'screen' is the set of mouse, vid card, monitor , and keyboard.

This error is more commonly produced by a wrong video card configuration.

When configuring your xserver, try using the 'vesa' driver. in most cases this will give you the 'work arround' until you can set the righ video drivers for your hardware.

If you need more specific help about your problem, you need to provide your hardware specs, debian distro, running kernel, error and config files.

for the error and config files you can do:

--insert floppy in drive
--as root type ...

mount /floppy
cp /var/log/XFree86.0.log /floppy
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /floppy

come here in you working OS and paste the contents in this forums.

I reconfigured my shit using dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.But now it says:
Module load failure

On my computer i have a Geforce FX AGP 8X, AMD athlon 2800+, DEAWOO 518B(monitor), Debian 3.0.2, kernel: 2.2.20
I got also a verry old mouse(just to buttons) and a old keyboard.

And i copied the shit to my floppy but i cant mount it on my mandrake(the running os) but i can mount it on my debian.
When i try to mount it it says:
mount: Acces denied

you probably can't mount it because you dont have permission. try mounting as root for now.

I am going to ask this at risk to sound stupid but...

Does the folder '/mnt/floppy' exist ?

if it does exist, is this folder a link to '/dev/fd0' ?

in this case I would try somthing like...

#mkdir /floppy
#mount /dev/fd0 /floppy

or...

#mount /mnt/floppy

i created /floppy.
Code:
[root@DONKER floppy]# mount /dev/fd0 /floppy
mount: slechte bestandssysteem soort, slechte optie, slecht superblok op /dev/fd0,
       of teveel aangekoppelde bestandssystemen
translating:
mount: bad file system type , bad option, bad block on /dev/fd0, or to many mounted file systems.

I think i found the problem:
Assigning device with no BusID to primary device.
I only have no idea what it means.
So could anyone tell me what to do?

here are the files:
Code:
### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 server configuration file) generated by dexconf, the
# Debian X Configuration tool, using values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# If you want your changes to this file preserved by dexconf, only make changes
# before the "### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION" line above, and/or after the
# "### END DEBCONF SECTION" line below.
#
# To change things within the debconf section, run the command:
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
# as root. Also see "How do I add custom sections to a dexconf-generated
# XF86Config or XF86Config-4 file?" in /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz.

Maybe you can compare your settings in mandrake and in debian to see the différences.
Nvidia is known to give problems and they have non-free drivers but nv should do the job.
I've read : "Option "UseFBDev" "true" in the device part.
Does it mean you're using frame buffer option? Try to comment that one (put # before the line)

Good luck. Marc A

Libranet is a Debian system that has the ability to facilitate an easy install. Once easily installed you have Debian. It also has a great hardware detection system. Check out the reviews at http://www.distrowatch.com/ or just visit the website at http://libranet.com/
