?'s on burning cdroms using w98 to get started.
 

I have an external cd burner for winX. I have several questions related to downloading and burning from win98. I don't have broadband, but a friend with w98 does and is willing to d/l for me to a folder, then I hope that I can go and retrieve the linux to my external burner. IS this possible to do. OR do I have to have the cable modem send the file to the burner directly? I am new to burning...only had cdrom prior.

What I want to do is d/l something like arch or knoppix first to learn some linux on first. Then make the 'jump' to installed linux.


1. If I d/l to a win partition, will the burn from there be okay?

1.a Is there anyway to burn a linux cdrom using w98?

2. Will this affect the win partition in any way. Don't want to loooooose a friend that way!!!

I just d/l'd hal91 to flappy, er, floppy and it boots up my ole k6-2 350 okay, don't know yet what to do with it, but the prompt comes up. And as you can see, w98 still works.

Ps: The wife's ole 'freebie' ... the p120 nec junker (she gripes about it) did too after 'tricking' her into booting it. She likes challenges, and has been yacking about linux for 3 years. Now that we have two ole junkers, time to mess one up, er, load linux...hehehehe.

Hey, don't get mad, I wise crack a lot!! I tried linux years ago, and had it up... Unfortunately, I have slept twice since then and will have to re-learn it the hard way.

Burning a Linux CD on Win98 is no problem.

All data CD's follow the same basic format. If you download an ISO image then the burning software on Win98 should have no problem with it.

Thats how most people make their first Linux CD after all. :)

Thanks leonscape, that is what I thought, but wanted to know for sure.

Do I d/l to a file in a directory on his "C" drive first, then burn it or attempt a burn straight from the cable connection?

Like I said, I am NEWBIE to cd-r/cd-rw's. I will burn cdr not cdrw. That much I have figured out since my old cdrom in the k6 wont read cdrw's, but reads cdr's.

i think that this should answer most of your ?????'s regarding burning cdroms from downloaded ISO's.

You need to download the ISO(s) files to a directory and then burn to CDR. You can't burn CDR's across a network connection because the speed isn't fast enough for the writer.

That is what I thought, even cable modem when no one else is d/ling probably couldn't handle it.
