I think I hosed my debian system today. I was trying to install splashy. Followed these instructions:
cp /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/rivafb.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/initrd/rivafb.ko
rm /lib/modules/`uname -r`/initrd/vesafb.ko
mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.8-2-386
that I found here
because the original fb driver (vesafb) which was loaded during boot wouldn’t work together with my video-card’s framebuffer. So I used the above to try the rivafb driver.
And now my screen fills with a row of rivafb_pan_display during boot, and wont stop. Cant get to any consoles to unload the driver.
Is there someway to use grub's limited console to fix this?
I tried editing the boot options with grub, specifically I tried putting video=rivafb
ff on the 'kernel' line; I also used a knoppix cd to edit menu.lst so I could change the '#kopt' line the same way.
How can I fix this so splashy is uninstalled and I get control of my system back, either from within grub, or using a knoppix cd? Or any other way (of course)?
