yellowdog intermitent connection issue -- one-way ping

I am running Yellow Dog Linux on a G4 with two interfaces, intending to run it as a Web server and squid proxy server. I can sit at the server and ping addresses in my private network without fail, but connections to the squid server from those (windows) clients often, but not always, fail.

If I try to ping the server from the clients, I get a variety of results. Sometimes the request will time out all four times. Sometimes the server will respond to the ping one of the four times, or two, etc. If I ping from the client right after I have pinged from the server, then the ping will get a response all four times.

I'm not really sure where to start ...
